Who starts a food blog these days?
There is a food blog about everything. I realized this when I was searching the internet to vet food blog names. A Full Belly has been snapped up, along with Om Nom Nom. The Urban Epicure was snatched from my hands. So was Lives To Eat. Even my current name, Brazen Crumpets, came dangerously close to ‘Buttered Crumpets and Brazen Strumpets’, but I think I’m safe enough.
The truth is, I don’t know too much about food other than the wisdom dispensed unto me by my very own tongue. I take the Nigella Lawson approach to cuisine: I’m an Eater, not a Chef.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to cook – as long as you don’t mind everything looking like casserole. A best friend and devotee of blenders, slow cookers, and anything else that makes food decompose into a colourful soup, I can whip up a mean goulash, borsh, porridge or famed blueberry martini smoothie. But perfecting the soufflé has been a long abandoned aim, along with becoming a jazz dancer or marrying Prince William.
I’ve got a lot against me. Too much competition. I can’t really cook. My idea of Food Photography is using ‘retro’ setting on my Power Cam iPhone app. I sometimes eat my food so quick I don’t even register what’s on my plate. There are entire weekends when I consume solely liquids, not solids. It’s Friday the 13th.
So why did I start a food blog?
I walk the streets according to Urban Spoon ratings, not Google maps. It just makes sense.
